Why Orlando is the Ultimate Memorial Day Weekend Destination
In the United States, we spend Memorial Day honoring the many brave heroes who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. For many families, the long weekend also coincides with the start of summer vacation, so many people choose to celebrate with a family getaway. If you are considering a Memorial Day getaway but haven’t yet decided on a destination, consider treating your family to an Orlando vacation. From nearby beaches to local festivals, here are some reasons why Orlando is the ultimate Memorial Day weekend destination.
1. The beaches near Orlando are a car ride away.
If Memorial Day weekend marks the start of your summer, perhaps you’d like to celebrate with a trip to the beach. Florida has many beautiful beaches, many of which are easily accessible from Orlando. An hour’s drive towards the east coast will take you to Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast. You can also take a short trip west to visit Clearwater Beach and many other gulf coast beaches known for their clear waters and sparkling white sands. By staying in Orlando, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the beaches while also enjoying the city’s many dining, shopping, and entertainment options that you won’t find at smaller beach towns.
2. Orlando parties are fire.
Speaking of things to do, Orlando is home to lit nightlife that also regularly features major touring artists. The best part is you won’t have to go far to find a party. Mangos, a tropical-themed nightclub/dinner show located on International Drive, is famous for its delicious food and talented performers. Pointe Orlando is another popular nightlife hub in the International Drive area with venues such as B.B. King’s Blues Club and Improv Comedy Club.
In downtown Orlando you’ll find the Amway Center, a premier sports and entertainment venue which attracts the likes of Ariana Grande, Marc Antony, and even Elton John. You’ll also find talented acts at venues such as The Plaza Live and the Dr. Phillips Center.
3. Orlando has plenty of family-friendly entertainment, too.
A night on the town might not be your first choice if you are visiting with family. Not to worry – Orlando has lots of family-friendly entertainment as well. In fact, it’s what we are most famous for. Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and even LEGOLAND Florida Resort are all right here. Many theme parks also feature exclusive programming during the summer, so be sure to check out each individual park to see what extras they might offer during the holiday weekend.
If visiting a theme park in 90 F weather makes you sweaty just thinking about it, consider cooling off with a trip to a water park instead. Each of the main theme park companies also has their own water park. Rides at Orlando’s water parks range from mild to wild, so they appeal to all age groups. All of the parks also include play areas for kids and toddlers.
4. Legit local festivals.
Of course, theme parks and water parks aren’t for everyone. If you’re looking for local entertainment, Orlando has plenty of that too. The Orlando Fringe Festival takes place May 12 -25 and is a great place to support independent art. You can feel good about purchasing tickets for shows because all proceeds go directly to the artists.
If you are looking for a party, Orlando Carnival Downtown has got you covered. This year’s events will take place on May 24 at Camping World Stadium and include live music, dancing, arts and crafts vendors, and even a parade, all celebrating the diverse cultures of the Caribbean.
5. There are lots of discounts for US Military members.
While we often think of Memorial Day as a start to the summer festivities, it’s important not to lose sight of why we celebrate this special day. As we remember the brave heroes who gave their lives while in the armed forces, we also acknowledge current and retired military members. If you are an active or retired member of the US Armed Forces, you can enjoy several discounts at popular attractions such as:
- Orlando Science Center
- Central Florida Zoo
- Crayola Experience Orlando
- ICON Park
6. Orlando has affordable, quality hotels.
